World War II, Major Unit Patches

The use of shoulder patches by the Corps during W.W. II began with Letter of Instruction # 372 published 15 March 1943. Authorized were patches for the Divisions, Wings, and several other units. On 27 October 1943 several other units were authorized shoulder patches, and the regulations for wear were published. The wear of unit patches by Marines was discontinued by Letter of Instruction, 1499, with an effective date of 1 Jan, 1948. Patches were embroidered on twill, felt, full embroidery and woven silk. The following 2 patches are not listed but will be in the future upon aquisition. 4th Base Defense Air Wing, and the 1st MAC Artillery Patches.
